A metal roof hurricane wind rating is a tested number that shows how much wind uplift pressure a specific roof assembly resisted in a laboratory. It is not a guarantee that a roof will survive a given storm. That difference matters for Florida homeowners asking whether metal roofs are good in hurricanes. The honest answer is that a well-designed, properly approved and carefully installed metal roof can perform very well, but no roof is hurricane-proof.

This guide covers what the rating measures, how the Florida Building Code and product approvals fit in, and why installation matters as much as the panel. Rules vary by city, county and insurance carrier, so confirm details with your local building department and your own policy. For the full picture of what we install, see our guide to metal roofing services in Tampa Bay.

What a Metal Roof Hurricane Wind Rating Measures

A metal roof hurricane wind rating describes the uplift pressure, usually in pounds per square foot, that a tested roof system resisted. The word system matters. TAS 125 is the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ) protocol, and it tests the panels together with how they are attached. Outside the HVHZ, section 1504.3.2 of the Florida Building Code, Building, accepts UL 580, ASTM E1592 or TAS 125 for metal panel roof systems, and your local building department decides what applies. The structural deck under a non-structural metal roof must meet the code too.

Two things follow. First, a rating only applies when the roof is built the way it was tested, with the same panel, clips or fasteners, spacing and deck. Second, a rating is a laboratory pressure, not a storm forecast. Approvals can list separate values for the field and for the perimeter and corner zones. You can read the protocol on the ICC Digital Codes page for TAS 125.

Are Metal Roofs Good in Hurricanes? An Honest Answer

Metal roofs can be a strong choice in hurricane country, but "good in hurricanes" depends on details no brochure can promise. Metal panels are tested for uplift, and the Florida Building Code requires them to be made to the limits of their product approval.

What the paperwork cannot tell you is how one house will fare. Storm damage also depends on wind-borne debris, roof shape, deck condition, roof-to-wall connections and maintenance. Coastal Roofing Group installs metal roofing across Tampa Bay, and we encourage homeowners to treat a metal roof hurricane wind rating as evidence of tested capacity, not immunity. For a balanced look at the trade-offs, read our article on the pros and cons of a metal roof in Florida.

Metal Roof Wind Speed Rating vs Uplift Pressure vs Impact

People often use "wind rating" for three different things. Keeping them apart makes every spec sheet easier to read.

  • Design wind speed: Section 1609.3 of the 2023 Florida Building Code, Building, sets the ultimate design wind speed for a building from maps organized by risk category. It belongs to the site, not to the panel.
  • Storm category: the National Hurricane Center says the Saffir-Simpson scale rates a hurricane only by its maximum sustained wind speed. It describes the storm, not your roof.
  • Uplift pressure: the laboratory result behind a metal roof wind uplift rating, shown in pounds per square foot.
  • Impact and water: separate procedures exist for impact (TAS 201) and wind-driven rain (TAS 100), and neither equals an uplift number.

Florida Building Code and Metal Roof Product Approval

Section R905.10 of the 2023 Florida Building Code, Residential, says metal roof panels must be made in line with their product approval specifications and limitations of use, under a quality assurance program audited by an entity the Florida Building Commission approves. Panels must be secured to the supports according to the chapter and the manufacturer's installation instructions. You can read the section in the 2023 FBC Residential, Chapter 9.

Statewide Florida Product Approval is handled under Rule 61G20-3 of the Florida Administrative Code, which lists roofing products among its categories, and approvals are posted through the Florida Building Commission site. A homeowner can ask the contractor for the approval number of the exact panel and attachment being quoted, then ask the building department to confirm it.

Miami-Dade NOA Metal Roof Approvals: What the Document Shows

A Notice of Acceptance, or NOA, is a product approval issued by the Miami-Dade County Product Control Section. Its text says it can also be used in other areas where the authority having jurisdiction allows it, so ask your local building department which approval documents it accepts.

A current example is NOA 25-1112.17 for a steel 5V roof panel. It names the tests used (TAS 125 and TAS 100 among them), the approved deck type and attachment, and a table of maximum design pressures tied to fastener spacing, with a lower value for wider spacing and a higher one for tighter spacing. It also states that extrapolation shall not be allowed. The number is valid only for the installation the document describes, and a copy must be available at the job site for inspection.

Test Standards for Metal Panels: ASTM E1592, UL 580 and UL 1897

TAS 125 sorts metal roofing into two types. Structural metal roofing, which can span supports without a deck below, is tested to ASTM E1592 with a margin of safety of 2. Non-structural, or architectural, metal roofing sits on a separate structural deck and is tested to UL 580 as modified by the protocol, also with a margin of safety of 2. A certified testing agency must run the tests, with reports signed and sealed by a Professional Engineer.

ASTM E1592 evaluates sheet metal panels and their attachment under uniform static air pressure, and it covers standing seam, trapezoidal, ribbed and corrugated panels. For metal roof shingles, the residential code accepts ASTM D3161, FM 4474, UL 580, UL 1897 or TAS 107. When someone shows you a metal roof hurricane wind rating, ask which standard produced it.

Why Installation, Fasteners and Decking Matter as Much as the Panel

A tested panel is only as strong as what holds it down. A different clip, a wider fastener spacing or a weak deck can put a roof outside the conditions behind its rating.

Decking and framing count too. In the HVHZ, TAS 125 requires wood decking under non-structural metal systems to be at least 15/32 inch thick. For some re-roofs, Section R908.8 of the Florida Building Code, Residential, also calls for roof-to-wall connection upgrades. Soft or rotted decking is a red flag we cover in signs your roof will not survive a hurricane. A sound metal roof hurricane wind rating starts with sound decking.

Questions to Ask Before You Trust a Metal Roof Hurricane Wind Rating

Use these questions with any contractor, including us, before you sign.

  • Which Florida Product Approval, NOA or evaluation report covers this exact panel, clip and fastener?
  • Which test standard produced the uplift number, and does it apply to my roof zones?
  • What deck type and attachment does the approval require, and will the deck be inspected after tear-off?
  • What fastener spacing will be used at the edges and corners?
  • Will the work be permitted and inspected by my local building department?
  • What does the written workmanship warranty and qualifying manufacturer material warranty cover?

Insurance rules differ by carrier, and a wind rating does not promise coverage or a discount. Ask your insurer what it requires and read our wind mitigation inspection guide. Before storm season, use our hurricane season roof prep guide.

Metal Roof Hurricane Wind Rating FAQ

Is any metal roof hurricane-proof?

No. Nothing built can be called hurricane-proof. A metal roof with the right approval, deck and installation can resist high winds well, but debris, roof shape, age and maintenance still affect results. Treat any hurricane-proof claim as a warning sign, and check your own policy and local rules.

Does a higher wind rating mean my roof is safe at that wind speed?

Not directly. A rating is an uplift pressure from a laboratory test of a specific system, not a mile-per-hour promise. Your roof's real loading depends on its location, height, shape and zone. A designer or your building department can tell you what your site requires.

What wind rating does my Tampa Bay roof need?

It depends on your site's design wind speed, risk category, exposure and roof geometry, as the Florida Building Code lays out, and your jurisdiction can have its own requirements. Ask your building department what applies to your address, then confirm the contractor's approval covers it.
